Back in August I was on my summer holiday sitting on a beach in Brittany, France, when I received a phone call from a lady who worked for the Birmingham Mail. She informed me that I had been nominated and made the final for the Stephen Sutton Inspirational Person Award. I was shocked to say the least.
Stephen Robert Sutton, MBE, was an English blogger and charity activist known for his blog Stephen's Story and his fundraising efforts for the Teenage Cancer Trust charity for the aid of teenagers with cancer. By the second anniversary of his death, £5.5 million had been raised in his memory. Following his death they named the pride of Birmingham inspirational person award after him.
I honestly could not believe it when it was announced that I had won the award, especially in the presence of my mum, sister and two close friends. I was immensely proud and humbled that people could see the hard work I have put in over the past 8 years after my brain injury. "The only disability in life is a bad attitude, so why not have a positive one and see how far it can take you." this is the quote I had a going through my head as picked my award up on stage, attitude is everything!!
Thank you to the Birmingham Mail and Stephen Sutton's mum, Jane Sutton for the award. It's a night me and my family will never forget.
